The ill-fated sim-group introduced on version 2.0 pushed the site into a different direction. I was really enjoying fan-written Star Trek stories at the time and decided to do the same for Starbase 49.
With the help of others a start was made on the very first Starbase 49 story. The site would serve as platform to those stories and the background information.
The original Starbase 49 features were still aboard. Version 2.0 already had an on-line store where one could order Star Trek items through amazon.com. On this version this was extended with Starbase 49.com branded merchandise using the service of Cafepress.com.
An important change was the decreased use of Flash on the website. Maintaining content in Flash wasn't easy and so most of the Flash content was converted into regular images.
The sim-group was out-sourced to a friend that ran a RPG site called Final Frontiers, but even there it didn't take off.
